SUMMARY:Week Without Driving
DESCRIPTION:Week Without Driving runs October 1–8. Today is day 2\, and it is not too late to try a trip\, a half day\, or the rest of the week. \n\n\n\nBackground: about a third of people in the U.S. don’t drive — because of age\, disability\, or the cost of a car. Most places are still built as if everyone does. The challenge\, started in 2021 by disability advocate Anna Zivarts\, asks people who can drive to get around by bus\, bike\, walking\, or asking for a ride\, so they see those gaps firsthand: missing sidewalks\, infrequent buses\, places you can’t reach without a car. More than 800 groups are taking part this year. \n\n\n\nSign up at weekwithoutdriving.org and share with #WeekWithoutDriving.

SUMMARY:Walk Audit on Meredith Drive
DESCRIPTION:Help us close out Week Without Driving by evaluating pedestrian safety on Meredith Drive. With no sidewalks\, heavy traffic\, and limited access to nearby bus stops on Merle Hay Road\, this corridor poses real challenges for neighbors walking or rolling. \n\n\n\nWe will gather for a quick brief on the corridor’s history\, observe traffic conditions\, and conduct a short walk audit using the AARP Walk Audit Tool Kit. Stay for the full hour or just 15 minutes for the static observation—your input will help shape our recommendations to city officials.

SUMMARY:Urbanist Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For the past few months\, our reading group has focused on assigned books\, articles\, and excerpts. This week\, we’re trying something different. \n\n\n\nThere will be no assigned reading. Instead\, we’ll get together and talk about whatever urbanist material you’ve recently finished or are currently reading\, watching\, or listening to. Share what you’ve learned\, what you’d recommend\, and how you’re applying (or might apply) those ideas. \n\n\n\nNo one will be asked to finish and explain Don Shoup’s 733-page The High Cost of Free Parking. 😉 \n\n\n\nStrong Towns Local Conversations are DIY by design. Professional urbanists are always welcome\, and we value their expertise\, but most of us are teaching ourselves. Bring any readings or other urbanist media you’d like to recommend and share.
